A Contribution to an AHC Calendar An AHC calendar is a means for the edification of a distinct Hebrew Catholic identity. Like the Jewish people, Hebrew Catholic's are dispersed worldwide. Their motives for entering the Church are highly personal, their individualism is pronounced and their sense of continuity with Israel's past is weak. An AHC calendar could help offset these deficiencies by providing Hebrew Catholics with a general framework to their lives and a collective memory. It should give an historical dimension to their presenence in the Church. An AHC calendar has no pretension to pre-empt the decision of the Holy See relative to the sanctity of some of the persons included in its list. A full calendar would have to commemorate days already sanctified by the Latin Rite, the Hebrew Catholic paraliturgy now being developed and some days of particular significance for the modern Hebrew Catholic. Such days would include: "Holocaust Day", the anniversary of the Apparition of Our Lady of Zion to Alphonse Ratisbonne (20 January) and the anniversary of the death of St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein - 9 August). In addition, it should include the saints of the Old Testament, whose sanctity is not recognized by the generality of Catholics, as well as many names in the New Testament - lessor actors in the drama of Calvary, who have found no place in the hearts of the faithful of the Latin Rite. In the Vatican document "Notes for the Correct Presentation of Jews and Judaism in Catholic Preaching and Catechesis, July 1985," we read:
This passage provided the immediate stimulus for the drawing up of the list which follows. An intelligent use of the proposed calender in reunions of the AHC should place it in the forefront of those agencies which are being called upon to implement the program proposed by the "Notes". | ||||||
